In first-round singles action at the $75,000 President's Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, Marco Chiudinelli (SUI) defeated Alberto in two hard-fought sets 7-6(1), 6-3. With the President of Kazakhstan in attendance, Alberto and Chiudinelli traded service games in the opening set as neither player was able to seize the advantage. The set proceeded to a tiebreaker where Chiudinelli took the early lead and never looked back as he won the breaker in convincing fashion, 7-1.
In the second set, both Alberto and Chiudinelli played well with the only difference being a break of Alberto's serve. In the end, that single break was enough for Chiudinelli to take the second set 6-3 as he advanced into the second round with the well-earned victory. In doubles play, Alberto and partner Andrei Plotniy (RUS) faced off against the #4 seeded duo of Denis Istomin (UZB) and Alexey Kedriouk (KAZ). Alberto and Plotniy came out of the gate fast in the first set as they forced an early break of serve and made it hold up in taking the set 6-3. In the second set, Alberto and Plotniy continued their excellent play in taking a quick 2-0 advantage. Down 2-3, Istomin and Kedriouk rallied to earn a break of serve as they evened the set at 3-all. With Alberto and Plotniy serving to extend the second set at 4-5, the #4 seeds broke once more to take the set and force a deciding super-tiebreaker. In the superbreaker, the combo of Istomin/Kedriouk got off to a fast start and never let off the gas pedal as they won the breaker 10-6, booking a spot in the quarterfinals. |

Hello to all! I hope everyone enjoyed the Holiday season and are now set in their routines for 2009. I spent the Christmas holidays with my family in McAllen, Texas, which was great. The temperatures pushed into the high '80's, which is not exactly winter holiday weather for most of us but is rather typical for South Texas. | | Read more... |
