Alberto Has Double Duty on Tuesday PDF Print E-mail

Alberto begins play at the $75,000 President's Cup (Astana, Kazakhstan) on Tuesday in both singles and doubles.  First up on the docket for Berto will be a noon singles encounter against Marco Chiudinelli (SUI).  Following his singles match at approximately 3:30 p.m., Alberto and Andrei Plotniy (RUS) take on Denis Istomin (UZB) and Alexey Kedriouk (KAZ) in doubles action.  There is one significant change in the draws for both singles and doubles.  Dmitry Tursunov (RUS), who is currently ranked #26 in the world, accepted a wildcard into the President's Cup and will open play as the #1 seed in both singles and doubles.  Tursunov and doubles partner Yuri Schukin (KAZ) won their first-round doubles match today by defeating Danjil Braun (KAZ) and Dmitry Resnyanskiy (KAZ) 6-3, 7-6(4). Tursunov plays Guillermo Alcaide (ESP) in his opening round singles match on Tuesday.

With the 2008 campaign concluded, Alberto is back in his home state of Texas for the off-season where Berto will get some well-earned R&R as he considers his schedule for 2009.

News Flash

In the opening round of qualifying at the $135,000 IPP Open (Helsinki, Finland), Jonathan Marray (GBR) upset #7 seed Alberto in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.  After Berto and Marray split the first two sets, the match came down to a deciding final set.

Hello to all!  I hope everyone enjoyed the Holiday season and are now set in their routines for 2009.  I spent the Christmas holidays with my family in McAllen, Texas, which was great.  The temperatures pushed into the high '80's, which is not exactly winter holiday weather for most of us but is rather typical for South Texas.
